Today, news broke that FOX is developing a live-action X-Men TV show - though specifics were few and far between. At present, the series is simply shopping around for further development, with absolutely no plot or even much of a creative team attached, which has caused a tidal wave of speculation to course through the internet.
Produced by Evan Katz and Manny Coto, the series will be written by Star Trek 3 scribes Patrick McKay and JD Payne, according to THR. The show's confirmation came by way of TV Insider, who were given the go by FOX chairman Gary Newman.
Not even a full week ago, three important new cast members were announced for the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse film. Details on whether the film and TV universes will connect are flimsy, and the show still needs approval by the big-wigs at Marvel before it can proceed.
But with no details, no clear path, and only Apocalypse on the horizon, fans have been left to speculate. So, what could the show be about?
X-Factor
This one's been on the speculation backburner for some time now, but is a fairly viable idea. X-Factor was a title that spun off of the main X-Men storyline and introduced a new team of heroes comprised of X-Men characters who didn't get as much mainstream love.
This could be a wonderful show to introduce the lesser-known characters of the movie franchise, including Warpath (please?), Bishop (or his sister, Shard, who was technically part of the team once in the comics) Iceman, and many more. While connecting it to the movie universe is up in the air, doing so wouldn't be extremely hard story-wise.
Evolution
There seems to be a distinct divide when it comes to X-Men Evolution, the series that put our favorite mutants in high school and helped the Brotherhood gain a serious fanbase. Odd pairings galore (I will always ship Kitty and Avalanche) the show ran for a total of 52 episodes, and still holds a decent fandom today.
With FOX currently spearheading Gotham and finding tons of success with the origin story format, could we see the high school series done some justice with a live-action format and great writers?
A Separate Universe
Given that FOX was once the home to the original X-Men animated series (Marvel's buddy, ABC family, aired it later) one might consider the possibility of an all-new modern storyline that has nothing to do with the cinematic universe, but that's something of a stretch. A massive pool of characters, special effects, and a storyline that needs to hold up despite that might be a little much for television, but with the right funding and support, anything is possible.
More Wolverine
Wolverine has easily become the Darth Vader of X-Men: by that, I mean that he's on every piece of merchandise an advertising whether it actually involves him or not. The angry Canadian already has a standalone movie franchise, and has appeared in every X-Men ensemble film to date, but this would easily be the laziest choice for FOX to make. Sure, everyone knows and loves Logan, but haven't we had enough?
Jubilee
One of the most recent storylines featured Wolverine's beloved not-daughter, Jubilee, in a starring role. The entire team for this arc was comprised of women as led by Storm, who has yet to have justice done by her in live-action format, in this author's humble opinion. Jubilee herself is a spirited, fun character with ties to iconic X-Men and unique superpowers of her own. Picking storylines from the comics featuring Jubilee's character arc could be a great new start in the studio race for a strong woman of color headlining a series.
Plus, Jubilee was supposed to feature in X-Men: Days Of Future Past and has popped up in X-Men movies before, so why not do this now?
