After months of speculation and rumors, Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) who is set to direct this female-driven Ghostbusters remake just tweeted the following image featuring prominent comedic actresses Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones.
Feig has made no further commentary at the moment, but I just want to live in the world in which this is our lead cast of the Ghostbusters remake! Now that's what I call a fantastic four!
Having seen each of these women in a number of roles, including their work as cast members on Saturday Night Live (minus Melissa McCarthy, although she has hosted the show three times), I can say with a fair amount of confidence that these four lovely women could work together well to create a truly hilarious movie that would make Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis and Hudson proud.
Much to the dismay of some of my collegues, this cast is missing Kristen Wiig's partner in crime Maya Rudolph and their Bridesmaids costar Rose Byrne. But all hope is not lost! Just because they might not be two of the central four characters doesn't mean that they can't make an appearance. Also, it's not like Feig should just reproduce Bridesmaids, although I wouldn't really have a problem with that.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm crazy in love with this cast already and I'm really hoping it's already set! If it happens that Feig is just teasing us, well then, that's a pretty mean trick and I don't like it at all. I'm just going to prepare myself mentally for the awesomeness that will be Ghostbusters starring Kristen Wiig.
This story is still developing, so we'll be sure to update as soon as we know more.
UPDATE: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Melissa McCarthy has officially signed on for Feig's movie and Wiig, McKinnon, and Jones are all in final talks. Of course, anything can happen, so "final talks" could still fall through, although I doubt Feig would tweet that picture if he wasn't feeling positive that their deals would work out.
The film is currently looking to start filming in New York this summer.
UPDATE: Given the amount of flack towards the selected cast, I just wanted to say that these half of these women have already gotten the Bill Murray stamp of approval! At the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, Murray gave his opinion on the movie:
I’m fine with it. I would go to that movie, and they’d probably have better outfits, too.
He also gave a short list suggesting some women to be cast in the film. He named McCarthy (his costar for St. Vincent), Wiig, his Zombieland costar Emma Stone, and Mad Men star Linda Cardellini.
It looks like Hollywood took his advice! Two out of four isn't bad at all, so I think Bill Murray would be happy with these decisions.
UPDATE: Some plot details for the film have been released according to HitFix. Wiig, McCarthy, McKinnon and Jones will not be playing rebooted versions of Spengler, Stantz, Zeddmore and Venkman, but will be entirely new characters!
For those of us hoping that Bill Murray will make an appearance (so, everyone), there's also word that he might play the villain. Here's what we know so far:
Kristen Wiig is playing Erin Garber, a published author on the subject of the paranormal. Erin now works for Columbia University.
Leslie Jones is playing Abby Bergman, who co-authored the book with Garber. Since publication, the two former colleagues had a falling out and went their separate ways. Abby more actively chases ghost a la Ghost Hunters. This tension between academic investigation (Wiig's character) and mainstream media investigation (Jones' character) is central to the story.
Kate McKinnon is playing Abby Berman's new partner, Jillian.
Melissa McCarthy is playing Patty, an NYC subway worker who stumbles across the main, supernatural threat in the film.
Sony wants Peter Dinklage to play the main villain in the film. Whether this role is as a ghost or human is unclear.
Sony also wants Bill Murray to play a character named Martin Heiss, a man who is "a professional supernatural debunker who is out to prove that the Ghostbusters are frauds."
So, at the moment, this new remake will have no ties to the original Ghostbusters film. It is also expected to hit theaters on July 22, 2016.
