It should come as no surprise that the events of The Avengers: Age Of Ultronwill certainly devastate our favorite heroes. The movie will be epic. The scope will be larger. The stakes will be higher. That much is well known. Our heroes will have to clash with their toughest enemy yet who was brought to life by Iron-Man himself (perhaps with the help of Hank Pym’s blueprints).
The conflicts between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark will continue to mount in this film eventually leading up to the events in Captain America: Civil War. What fans may not realize is that there are certain clues that may prove to us that Captain America will perish in Civil War. Here are FIVE clues that may confirm that Cap will succumb to the inevitable war that lies ahead.
WARNING: SPOILERS abound straight from the comics. Read at your own risk.
1. Chris Evans does not want to play Captain America FOREVER
There comes a time in an actor's life when they realize that enough is enough. That’s not to say that Chris Evans hasn’t enjoyed donning the red, white, and blue costume daily. On the contrary he very much enjoys being the Marvel symbol for life, liberty, and freedom. In an interview last year, Chris stated that acting is his passion but would like to shift focus on possibly directing a few movies to see how it goes. Variety points out that Evans feels very fortunate to play a character well-beloved by fans.
“Without these movies, I wouldn’t be directing,” he said. “They gave me enough overseas recognition to greenlight a movie. And if I’m speaking extremely candidly, it’s going to continue to do that for as long as the Marvel contract runs.”
One thing's for sure, whenever someone signs on to play a major character in any Marvel film, the contract usually spans around ten years. For Robert Downey Jr. however, it seems longer. That basically means that the actor MUST perform as the character whenever they are given the opportunity, however Marvel will listen and try their best to work around the schedules for these actors. It is a BIG commitment. This was how Evans responded:
“The problem was initially, it was a nine-movie contract. And they said, if these movies take off and do very well, and my life changes and I don’t respond well, I don’t have the opportunity to say, listen, I need a fucking break. That just scared me.”
It is certainly a life changing experience indeed. When you think of Robert Downey Jr., who immediately comes to mind? Iron-Man of course! Before that he wasn’t as much of a big time actor as he is today. Every time fans see him, they must get there photo with “Tony Stark.” This is a big change for an actor both on stage as well as in their personal life. Evans also stated he may get back to acting after directing for a while.
“For all I know, in five years, I might say, ‘Shit, I miss acting.’ Right now, I just want to get behind the camera and make movies.”
He recently had a candid conversation with his team about it. One of his agents even tried to twist his arm, asking, “What if, hypothetically, some role came along and it was great?” Evans wouldn’t budge. “We are turning a corner,” he told his rep.
Though a very minor reason to believe that this will be Chris Evan’s last film as Captain America, we won’t know for sure till at least the conclusion of Captain America: Civil War.
2. The Resurrection of the Red Skull
Have we seen the last of the Red Skull? My hope is that we haven’t. Hugo Weaving portrayed Johann Schmidt as the titular villain in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. After the events of that film, it begs the question as to what actually happened to him in the first place. Towards the end of the film, we see him get “sucked” into the Tesseract and then fall right onto the floor and burn through the aircraft, falling straight down to Earth. After that, nobody knows what happened to him. We assume that he is dead, but my guess is that he is not. Even though Weaving signed a multi-picture deal for Marvel it does not mean that he is forced to return as the character when given another opportunity. In an interview way back in October of 2012, Hugo Weaving discussed his thoughts and feelings towards reprising his role as the Red Skull:
“And it’s not something I would want to do again. I’m glad I did it. I did sign up for a number of pictures and I suppose, contractually, I would be obliged to, if they forced me to, but they wouldn’t want to force someone to do it, if they didn’t want to. I think I’ve done my dash with that sort of film. It was good to do it and try it out, but to be honest, it’s not the sort of film I seek out and really am excited by. As an actor, to do all sorts of different films is great. It stretches you in different ways. But, I increasingly like to go back to what I used to always do, which is to get involved with projects that I really have a personal affiliation with.” Source: here.
It will interesting to see if Marvel even has plans to bring back this character. One thing is for sure; Weaving does not wish to continue his role as the Nazi leader. Could he have changed his mind since then? Perhaps, but my guess is that if Marvel chooses to bring back this character they will have to recast another actor to play him. The full cast for Captain America: Civil War has not been released but it feels good to speculate. Even though he’s not confirmed to return in Civil War you have to believe the Russo brothers could cook up an amazing storyline that would fit this cinematic universe. However, unless Marvel states that he is in fact returning, it looks like the Red Skull will remain hidden inside of that cube.
3. Crossbones IS confirmed to star in Captain America: Civil War.
Frank Grillo played as the Marvel villain known as Crossbones. Somehow he survived when the building crumbled down while fighting Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Though not a very well-known character, he played a very crucial role in the Civil War comics. He was one of two people who shot and killed Captain America at the conclusion of Civil War. Crossbones from the comics was one of the Red Skull's right-hand henchman. He was told by the Red-Skull to assassinate Captain America and fired a few shots towards him. However, it was the next person that I will mention that theoretically delivered the final blow. Since Crossbones survived and is already announced to star inCaptain America: Civil War, there’s a very good chance that he might be the one to execute Captain America.
4. Sharon Carter (Agent 13) is not yet confirmed to star in Captain America: Civil War.
Sharon Carter a.k.a. Agent 13 was played by Emily VanCamp and first introduced in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Though she didn’t have an integral role in The Winter Soldier, if cast in Civil War, she may in fact play a huge part in Cap’s demise. In the comics, Carter is brainwashed by (a certain someone who I will mention next) and is told to also assassinate Steve Rogers. Though Crossbones did in fact inflict multiple gun shot wounds on the Captain, it was Agent 13 who actually delivered the ultimate blow. It is a very sad and tragic ending to one of our favorite Avengers, but this was how it was written in the comics and will be interesting to see if the Russo brothers decide to go this route.
5. Finally, The Introduction of Doctor Faustus
Doctor Strange may not be the only physician you may hear about sometime this year. Doctor Faustus is yet another doctor who was introduced to the Marvel Universe way back in the year 1968. Doctor Faustus a.k.a. Johann Fennhoff, is famous for being the one who hypnotized Sharon Carter into assassinating Captain America at the steps of the courthouse. This took place towards the end of Civil War after Captain America let down his shield and surrendered.
If Dr. Faustus (Daniel Bruhl maybe?; although reports say he may perhaps be Baron Zemo) is in fact introduced to us in the Marvel cinematic universe, you can be sure that it would mean the end for Captain America. Even though he is not a major character or well known, he does play a central role in Civil War.His name has not been brought up yet for this motion picture, but it is important for us comic book fans to keep a sharp eye out and have our ears wide open.
